Fireworks Animation

I am currently working on my fireworks image, i have so far managed to make an animated clip of fireworks going off. It is very basic and i have allot to change to get it to the level that i am happy for the final image.

Finished Halloween Image

I have changed the original Halloween image that I have shown on the most recent post, I have made the turned the image more into a scene.

Changing the camera too a closer view on the house to give it significance in the image and making it look bigger to the viewer (i.e. making it scarier)

I have changed the texture of the ground and made it more bevelled, I experimented with different variations that I had been show in the lesson and am happy with the final result.

I also used the same idea on the house and experimented on different textures and colours until I found the perfect matching ones.

I have also added some trees that I made using the line tool and changed there opacity to keep them an creepy look and adding white scary faces!

Overall I am happy with the image, because with my first one it did not really portray Halloween more just a house with green windows. But now it has a more become more a scene, I have added background effects such as fog.

Haloween Scene

I have made my haunted house by using a different selection of shapes and modifying them (tapering, extrude, bevel etc.) I decided to make the inside aof the house green, dark and dingy..

I think it works well but at the moment doesn’t look that scary just looks like a house with green lights on so more work will be needed to capture that effect.

The background i made in Photoshop got an image of a sky and made it purple and added a moon with a witch flying past on her broom! This really started to make the image come together making the scene dark and dingy.

The bumpy terrain underneath the house was made by taking a plane and using noise to distort it, giving the scene an even spookier look.

I still have a allot of work to do on this image but i really like how it is coming along!

Haloween Sketch

The reason i have sketched out my ideas is because i like to get them down on paper first instead of inside 3dStudio itself.

Because i am finding the program quite challenging i need to have a clear idea of what my designs should look like so i can concentrate on using the software.

My idea for my Halloween image is to have a spooky/creepy house, surrounded by cartoon style tress with a which flying overhead.

I feel that this will make a good scene and i will be able to meet it with my 3DStudio Max skills.

Sorry for the lateness of my blog, have had allot of work on. None the less.....

I have made some small mood boards for each month that will eventually be my basics for my 3D images.

October 31 - Haloween
I chose Halloween mainly because of childhood memories, having a younger brother meant it was quite exciting time to get go out scaring people, for sweets.

Design point of view: As American as Halloween is everyone knows when they see bats, jaco-lanterns and scary things you will think of Halloween. I feel I can make a good 3D Studio max image as Halloween is very colourful with a cartoon style. (Leaving allot of room for over exaggeration on objects and scenery.) For my main image I will choose things me and my brother would do on Halloween.

Christmas December 25th
Christmas has always been a top favourite time of year, as is it to most people. But coming from a split family meant more to me to see both sides of family and just enjoy spending some quality time together.

Design point of view: Christmas is quite simple to depict in an image, winter scenes, presents, Father Christmas. (Giving wide varieties of colours and backdrops to work with.) I want to capture more a house at Christmas time as that is why I chose Christmas as a favourite month.

Novermber 5th - Fireworks Night

Who doesn’t love fireworks night? , watching big explosions and things that go bang. Mostly every year I have had fireworks in the back garden or been to an event, so is a regularly yearly event for me and one I look forward too.

Design point of view: Fireworks night, gives me a change to experiment with using different tools that i have discovered in 3DSMax, such as the fractal tool used for making explosions. I can use a wide range of effects and colours to catch my users attention.

Fruit Bowl Re-Designed

Second Blog Update on my 3D Studio Max Work

As I mentioned on my past post, I have been doing various tutorials and generally playing around with the software. I am slowly starting to get used to the interface and how different aspects of the program work.

I decided to have another go at the fruit bowl task we were set in class, as I felt that I had learnt allot more and could produce a better result. (The image below is what I came up with.)

As you can see it is a vast improvement from my first attempt, I am going to explain a quick rundown of how I made each part of the scene.

Bowl: The bowl I wanted to have a semi glass look, seeing as most fruit bowls are made of glass. I used a circle and simple cut of the top and changed the aspects so it was smoother also changing to colour to make the glass look real.

Apples: I basically used the same idea as my first apples, I used spheres and changed the points created to make them look bumpy and non symmetrical because let’s face it apples are not perfectly round and smooth. I then made a skin in Photoshop, using different techniques and made the apple stem out of a cone that I then deformed.

Orange: Orange was pretty simple, made a sphere, made it so it was not completely rounded and added a rough skin also made in Photoshop.

Bannans: The Bananas were a little tricky, I used the line tool and lathed them to make the outline then used smoothing tools and mesh options to give them their overall shape. (They still look a little square but I am happy with the result.)

Grapes: The grapes were another easy option but quite fiddly, simply a sphere that was stretched and skinned with a grape texture and then duplicated a few times as well as rotated and moved into different positions (but took a long time till I was happy with how they were sitting in the bowl.)

Table: I didn’t want the bowl to be floating so I decided to have a go at making a table, same techniques as making the banana, I used a line and lathed it around to make the outline shape and then created a wood texture and wrapped it.

Also I added walls and a floor just to make it a real scene and not on an invisible background.

Finally the lighting I used a combination of Omni lights and spotlights to create what I felt was a realistic light that made shadows on the areas that it would in real life.

Right that’s enough of me waffling on, let me know what you think, any feedback is always helpful as I may have missed aspects mainly because i have been looking at it a while and is my work :)

1st Post

Welcome to the wonderful world of my blog.....

After having the first lecture on 3D modeling, I have decided that this module is going to be a tough one. I personally have had little experience using 3D Studio Max, I have briefly used it in the past following a online tutorial on making a chair. It came out well until i tried to be clever and put pillows on the chair at this point after much frustration i gave up.

I have attempted making the fruit bowl that we were set in the lesson, I am quite happy with the result for a first attempt. But I think I am going to need a bit more practice to make it look more realistic.

I am going to be reading some online tutorials and just getting a feel for the program, which should make our classwork easier. I would strongly advise doing tutorials as they are the best way to learn a new program, base on personal experience.
