After having the first lecture on 3D modeling, I have decided that this module is going to be a tough one. I personally have had little experience using 3D Studio Max, I have briefly used it in the past following a online tutorial on making a chair. It came out well until i tried to be clever and put pillows on the chair at this point after much frustration i gave up.
I have attempted making the fruit bowl that we were set in the lesson, I am quite happy with the result for a first attempt. But I think I am going to need a bit more practice to make it look more realistic.
I am going to be reading some online tutorials and just getting a feel for the program, which should make our classwork easier. I would strongly advise doing tutorials as they are the best way to learn a new program, base on personal experience.

Hey thanks for the comment :) I think the fruit bowl pic is good, it's a very smooth and clean image. I especially like the detail- the dents on the apples. All it needs now is some texture and lighting and it could look real!
From first glance at your bowl I'm thinking. "now why doesn't mine look as good as that?" =P I think you did quite well with this, and I agree with Tom, with just a bit of texture and propper lighting it could look very realistic. ^^
